Eat Your Way to Healthy Skin

Your skin is both delicate and tough. It can take a beating from the sun, yet a paper cut can pierce it deeply. When it comes to caring for “nature’s wrapping paper” there are several things you can do to keep your skin in tiptop shape, including eating the right foods. Regularly consuming the foods below will ensure your skin stays healthy from the inside out. They can all be found in your local supermarket, and they’re all fairly inexpensive.

Yogurt

Yogurt is packed with protein, and protein is great for your skin. It keeps it firm, and helps to reduce lines and wrinkles. You don’t have to eat much; one serving per day will do the trick. Most people eat much more than one serving of protein per day. If we didn’t, our skin would be in pretty bad shape.

Salmon

Salmon is another food that packs tons of protein, but is also has the added benefit of omega 3 fatty acids, which help help keep your cell membranes healthy, as well as improving and maintaining brain function. One serving 2-3 times per week is enough to benefit both your skin and the brain.

Walnuts

Over time, your skin begins to lose its elasticity, which is what causes it to sag. Omega 3 and fatty acids help prevent this, and walnuts are rich in these nutrients. They’re also packed with collagen producing properties. A small handful can do wonders for your complexion. If you’re not into eating raw walnuts, try adding them to your favorite sweet treat.

Carrots

The vitamin A in carrots can help prevent breakouts by slowing down the production of outer layer skin cells. One large carrot per day is all it takes to have a powerful impact on your skin, and you’ll reap the benefits of the beta-carotene and vitamin K as well.

Papaya, Kale and Spinach

Your skin can become damaged at cellular level by free radicals. Luckily, several fruits and vegetables fight these invaders, and help your skin maintain a healthy glow. Among them are papaya, spinach and kale. They’re all rich in lutein, which is an amazing antioxidant.

Blueberries

Blueberries contain antioxidants, which aid in fighting wrinkles and sagging, also known as aging skin. It’s best to eat these in their raw form, and a cup or two per day is really all you need. If you don’t want to eat your blueberries by themselves, you can always sprinkle a few over a bowl of hot oats or cereal.

Water

Of course, we can’t talk about obtaining or maintaining healthy skin without mentioning the benefits of H2o. Water keeps your skin hydrated, and prevents it from becoming dry and flaky. It’s also good for cleaning your system and clearing up your complexion. You should have at least eight glasses per day. Doctors recommend that you drink half your body weight in ounces.

There’s no denying the power that’s found in whole, natural foods. Many of them have skin healing properties, and will benefit you almost immediately, by delivering the proper nutrients and vitamins to begin the skin restoration process. With that being said, it’s important to note that you won’t see visible results overnight. Healing your skin from the inside out takes time.
