Sports Bras: Which One’s Right for Your Activity?

A good sports bra is an absolute must for any woman working out; whether your workout level is intense or gentle, whether you would describe yourself as thin or voluptuous, whether you are working out in the gym, at the track, or in your own living room,

Of course, telling a woman to simply go to the store and choose a bra off the rack isn’t addressing her personal needs. No two women are made exactly alike, so it stands to reason that the perfect sports bra for one woman would not work at all for another.

We have narrowed down sports bras into four different categories, and have come up with some pointers to help you choose the best one for you.

Styles for Larger Busts

Larger busted women need bras that are well constructed, extremely supportive, and that provide enough coverage. While it may be tempting to simply choose a bra that you think looks cute and just get the biggest size, it won’t address the main concerns of most larger busted women.

Look for a bra with:

  • A firm fitting band around the rib cage.
  • A hook closure (trying to squeeze a pull-over bra onto a larger bust can be miserable)
  • Wide and/or padded shoulder straps to prevent “digging”
  • Support and lift, as opposed to just compression.

Styles for Intense Workouts

Anyone engaging in intense workouts needs a very supportive bra regardless of their bust size. However, the requirements do not stop there. You have to consider sweat, long-term comfort, and the flexibility of the bra itself.

Look for a bra with:

  • Moisture wicking properties. Chafing can become an issue, especially for distance runners.
  • Fabric that doesn’t stretch out over time. You want your bra to fit as well at the end of your workout as it did in the beginning.
  • Reinforced stitching and a good amount of stretch. This way, your bra can keep up with the intensity of your workouts.

Styles for Low-Impact Workouts

Low-impact workouts such as yoga, Pilates, stretching, or walking still require a sports bra, but one better suited to this type of activity.

Look for a bra with:

  • Soft and flexible fabric. If you are going from downward dog into cobra pose you want to make sure your bra is coming with you.
  • A supportive rib band, but not so firm as to impede your flexibility.
  • Good support and coverage in the bra’s neckline. Think inversions in yoga – now think about whether or not your bra will keep you “in” during your handstand.

Styles for Pregnancy, or Post-Baby Workouts

As long as your doctor is okay with it, it is very healthy for pregnant women to continue appropriate workouts, and it is also healthy for women to exercise postpartum. New mamas and expecting mamas have a few specific requirements though.

Look for a bra with:

  • A rib band that does not “cut” into your belly.
  • Hook closures that will allow you to adjust for a looser or tighter fit as your body changes.
  • Nursing flaps. Yes, nursing moms need sports bras too, and this style makes it much easier.
