Are you trying to lose weight and can’t seem to get rid of the extra pounds? Hitting a plateau in the middle of working on your fitness goals is not only frustrating, it can be downright discouraging. If this describes you, here are five issues you could be dealing with.

You’re Not Doing Enough Cardio

Cardio is an absolute must when you’re trying to lose weight. It’s one of the hardest parts of a workout, and one of the most important as well. Cardio exercises help get your heart rate up and take you to that fat burning zone. If you don’t do enough cardio, you could be putting your weight loss efforts in jeopardy. Start with something simple like jumping jacks or even jump roping each day. Walking and running are also great cardio exercises. Aim for 30 minutes a day at least 4 to 5 times a week.

You’re Eating Too Many Carbs

If you’re working up a sweat during your exercise sessions and yet you’re still not losing weight, you may need to check your diet. Carbs are often the culprit when people find they can’t shed the extra pounds. Write down what you’re eating on a daily basis and pay attention to the carbs. This includes foods like bread, pasta, cereal, and sweets. You may think you’re only having a small portion, but unless you’re measuring properly and planning meals ahead of time, chances are carbs are sneaking into your diet in many forms (think about that piece of french bread you eat with every salad, for example).

You’re Stressed

Too much stress can actually cause you to retain calories. This happens regardless of what you eat and how much you exercise. Stress signals your body to store fat, and can cause you to crave certain fatty or sugary foods. Combat stress with Yoga or with simple exercises like walking or running. It’s important to maintain low stress levels, not only for weight loss, but also for your heart health. Take time in the middle of the day to do something that you enjoy. Hobbies are great stress relievers as well.

You’re Mindlessly Eating

Mindless eating is almost like a disease itself. Most people don’t recognise when they’re eating “just because”. This normally occurs when you’re doing mindless tasks like watching TV or surfing the net. Talking on the telephone is another activity that often involves food.  If you find yourself snacking when you never intended to, replace the snacks with better food choices. Instead of potato chips, eat carrots or cucumbers. They’re both just as crunchy, and you’ll get the same satisfaction. Sprinkle a few spices or a pinch of salt on them for flavoring if you can’t stand the raw veggies.

You Have a Medical Condition

Some medical conditions, specifically hormonal imbalances, can cause you to retain fat. You wont be able to diagnose this on your own so it’s important to seek the advice of a physician if you suspect this is the case. Often, other symptoms accompany the weight gain, including mood swings and sweating. If a hormone issue is the case, don’t let that get you down. With the right medicine you can get back to losing weight and being the healthy person you set out to be.

Losing weight calls for a number of diet and lifestyle changes. It’s something that you’ll have to work at, and it won’t be easy. If you find that you just can’t seem to shed the pounds, you may need to tweak your routine, change your diet, or pay your doctor a visit.
